Employment Roundtable of the Tri-Cities – Inclusive Employer Awards

On September 8th at the Chamber of Commerce Mayor's BBQ, on behalf of the Employment Roundtable of the Tri-Cities, I had the pleasure and privilege of awarding the City of Port Moody the 2016 Inclusive Employers Award.

The Employment Roundtable of the Tri-Cities have sponsored this event because we want to raise awareness among Chamber members and recognize inclusive employers who are exemplars in the community. In 2016, we want to acknowledge the City of Port Moody for being an inclusive employer.

The City of Port Moody has been an inclusive employer for many years by employing a woman with a developmental disability. She received an award this year for her 25 years of service with the City.  During her career she earned a fair union wage and she will retire with a pension following her many years of service and dedication to the City of Port Moody. Here are the highlights of her career:

Over the years she has performed many different functions for the City:

  • Legislative Services – sorting the in-house, inter-office and outgoing mail and delivery of internal mail,
  • General office support, matching paperwork, checking and stocking office supplies for City Department’s including the Mayor’s office.
  • Library Services – shelf reading and restoring the order of the books on the shelves alphabetically and alphanumerically,
  • Fire and Rescue Services – she takes on small office projects, prepares treat bags for student tours and loves the Fire Department’s community spirit.

Quotes from City staff:

“She has captured everyone’s heart with her smile and her laugh.”

“She is an important member of our staff.  She is conscientious and tends her duties with a great attitude.”

“She has made us a better workplace by giving us a greater appreciation, awareness and acceptance of those with disabilities”.

Obviously, she has been a valued employee of the City of Port Moody and provided much value to taxpayers in our community. At the same time, because Port Moody is an inclusive employer she was given a chance to show that she can contribute to public service. Congratulations to his Worship, Mayor Clay who accepted our 2016 Inclusive Employers award on behalf of the City of Port Moody.
