Children’s Respite

The Children’s Respite Program at CVS is designed to support families who have a child with a disability. Respite is a family-to-family program where the child typically goes into the home of the caregiver to provide the family with a break from continuous care of their child. Respite visits generally happen over a weekend or on an overnight basis. However, a more flexible schedule can be designed to meet the needs of the family. Families interested in receiving respite should speak to their social worker for service inquiry. Families without a social worker can contact the Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD) to request an intake worker for their child.

Being a respite caregiver benefits the child, their family and your own family. The child gets to interact with others in the community and make new friends. Their family gets a much needed rest and time with other loved ones they may have at home. From your own family’s perspective, you get to make new friends with a child and have them be part of your own family activities and celebrations.

Watch the video below from a couple who welcomed a child into their home for respite care and learn more about what that experience has meant to them:

Respite provides short-term breaks for parents so that they can relieve their stress and  renew their energy. Respite care provides a break from caregiving duties, while their children receive the care they require in a safe and  caring environment. We match children with caregivers based on preferences, skill set and family dynamics. Final matches are done only after both the child’s family and the respite caregiver agree that they want to spend time together. If you would like additional information about our Respite Program , please email Joanne Weidinger , Manager of Children’s Services at joanne.weidinger@communityventures.ca
